Nespresso, now what? what else…

nespresso, what else? Okay, okay… the Nespresso? What else… catch line is becoming lamer and lamer by the day, mostly because George (Clooney, who else?) is pumping your mind full with those words, which I have to admit, catchy!

Whilst the real-to-be-claimed-espresso-baristas-expert tend to say that Nespresso is too expensive, too bloated with commercial and stuff, I just don’t give a crap. They are all complaining something like Nes’ machines use other pressure than the espresso machine should be, the coffee powder is too expensive (€0,32 per tasse, as one capsule is one cup), and the list goes on.

The main point is that they are suggesting the other whatever-brand of espresso machines are better. I agree, up to some points:

  • I don’t have the time to grind the beans, nor I have the grinder, nor I can afford one
  • I don’t have the time to tamper each servings, nor I have the tamper, nor I can afford one
  • I’m the only coffee drinker in the household, I don’t see the importance of having the real espresso machine (which indeed produces better tasting espresso than nespresso) - I have my nespresso machine in my bed room :P
(those basically the top reasons I can think of right now)

Conclusion: I’m happy with my nespresso machine, for the reasons stated :)

I spend though sometimes enjoying my coffee / espresso at Victor’s Espressobar in Haarlem (the Dutch Haarlem, not the US’ one). I can say that one goes in my very short list of ‘the hangout place’. The CoffeeDate-franchise is also OK, as well as Bagels & Beans (but seriously, the B&B should cut back on the ‘using biological milk’-crap… I want the full-dairy milk, not some conspiracy-theory-powered milk… milk is milk, damn it!)

Oh yeah, I have Bialetti’s stove-top as well, a gift from Monica (^_^)… only for special moments (like during a total day off)

What else?

With a single source for capsules, Nespresso has a perfect supplier’s monopoly as refleted by the price of each capsule. I feel like a ’sucker’ for falling into this trap. I would feel much better if they half the price of capsules, or if another independent entrepreneur supplies them cheaper and with new varieties. What they call a club is no more then an ordinary online capsules ordering system with no club member privileges of any kind. As a club member you get the ‘privilege’ to buy capsules at full price. The joke is on us!
